Eingebettet in den schimmernden Pazifischen Ozean in Mikronesien liegt Kiribati, die Heimat des größten Meeresschutzgebietes des Südpazifiks, der Phoenix Island Protected Area, die 2010 von der UNESCO zum Weltnaturerbe erklärt wurde und aus 32 Atollen und einer erhöhten Koralleninsel besteht.
Die Hauptinseln werden in der Regel in drei Gruppen zusammengefasst: die Gilbert-Inseln, die Line Islands, zu denen auch die bekannte Weihnachtsinsel gehört, und die Phoenix-Inseln. Tauchcenter und Tauchresorts, die eine Reihe von Tauchkursen und -ausflügen anbieten, gibt es zwar, aber nicht in großer Zahl, was für kleine Gruppen und ruhige Tauchplätze sorgt.
Wenn du in Kiribati tauchst, wirst du wahrscheinlich Landgänge erleben und von traditionellen Auslegerkanus aus tauchen. Auch Tauchsafaris sind eine Option, bei denen Taucher die besten Spots rund um verschiedene Inseln besuchen können.
Die wichtigsten Tauchbasen sind die Weihnachtsinsel und Tarawa. Die Weihnachtsinsel ist die größte und bekannteste Insel Kiribatis und beherbergt das größte Korallenatoll der Welt. Sie lockt viele Taucher zu ihren unberührten Riffen, in denen eine Vielzahl von Meeresarten gedeiht. Taucher können kaleidoskopische Rifffische, regenbogenfarbene Hart- und Weichkorallen, Drachenmuränen, Schildkröten, Riffhaie, Mantas und Adlerrochen und sogar Spinnerdelfine erwarten. Von Dezember bis April werden häufig Orcas, Delfine und Zwergwale gesichtet. Zwischen November und April ist es möglich, Walhaien zu begegnen. Auf dem Tarawa-Atoll gibt es außerdem fantastische Tauchmöglichkeiten und Relikte aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, die von den Konflikten in dieser Zeit herrühren.
