Independent Diving

The SSI Independent Diving specialty teaches experienced divers how to plan and execute dives safely without a dive buddy, focusing on self-reliance, advanced planning (like gas management), equipment redundancy (often with a backup air source), risk assessment, and emergency skills to handle situations alone, making you a more competent, self-sufficient diver for situations like solo diving or photography. It's about being responsible and capable, not reckless, and builds confidence for all types of diving. What You Learn: Self-Reliance : Strong awareness of your own condition and environment. Dive Planning : Advanced techniques for managing your dive, including calculating air consumption (SAC rates). Equipment : Using redundant air supplies and understanding essential backup gear.
