사우스 웨스트 록스는 뉴사우스웨일스주 북부 해안 중앙에 위치한 작은 어촌 마을로, 인구는 5천 명을 조금 넘는 정도이지만 휴가철에는 관광객들로 붐빕니다.
이곳에는 다이빙 센터가 두 곳밖에 없습니다. 다이빙 리조트는 없지만 두 센터 모두 다이빙과 숙박을 결합한 패키지를 제공합니다. 두 센터 모두 초급부터 나이트록스 같은 전문 과정까지 다양한 다이빙 강습을 제공합니다. 이곳은 라이브어보드(숙박형 다이빙 보트) 운항 지역이 아닙니다.
사우스 웨스트 록스에서 가장 유명한 다이빙 포인트는 피시 록 동굴(Fish Rock Cave)로, 호주 전체에서 손꼽히는 최고의 다이빙 명소 중 하나입니다. 길게 이어진 동굴 통로와 자연 채광으로 밝혀진 원형 극장 같은 공간에서 회색 간호상어의 실루엣을 감상할 수 있어 잊지 못할 다이빙 경험을 선사합니다. 그 외에도 아름다운 해양 생물들을 관찰할 수 있는 기회(사진작가라면 분명 만족할 만한 촬영 장소입니다), 다양한 종류의 바다거북, 심지어는 귀상어까지 만날 수 있습니다.
Top South West Rocks Dive Sites
1. Fish Rock Cave
One of Australia’s top dives, this 125m-long cave features shallow (12m) and deep (24m) entrances. Inside, spot crayfish, wobbegongs, and grey nurse sharks. Advanced scuba only. Highlights include chimneys, a bubble cave, and the light-filled “Aquarium” chamber.
2. Green Island
Ideal for all levels, this 14m-deep site offers vibrant ledges and sponge-covered overhangs. Common sightings include cuttlefish, turtles, bull rays, and blind sharks. Can be dived as a gentle drift and is well-suited for relaxed exploration.
3. The Pinnacle
Located northeast of Fish Rock, this advanced dive site reaches 30–35m. Strong currents are common, but divers are rewarded with grey nurse sharks, steep walls, and sand-bottomed resting spots for large pelagics. Scuba only; guide recommended.
4. Shark Gutters
At 24m depth, this scuba site features cracks in the seabed where grey nurse and wobbegong sharks rest. A great option for intermediate to advanced divers looking for close encounters with big marine life in a more open, sandy environment.
5. Ladies Reef & Gaol Reef
Accessible shore dives ideal for beginners, macro photography, and night diving. These shallow sites are home to nudibranchs, octopus, and other small critters, offering a calm and rewarding experience just off the beach.

따뜻한 북해류 덕분에 사우스 웨스트 록스에서는 연중 다이빙이 가능합니다. 마을 분위기가 조용하기 때문에 관광객이 많은 여름철에 다이빙 투어가 더 자주 진행됩니다.
사우스 웨스트 록스는 여름은 따뜻하고 겨울은 온화한 따뜻하고 습한 기후를 보입니다. 여름철(11월~3월) 평균 기온은 27°C입니다. 반면 겨울철(5월~10월)은 낮 평균 기온이 18.7°C로 더 서늘합니다. 강수량은 연중 비교적 일정하며, 가을이 가장 비가 많이 오는 계절입니다. 수온은 여름에 최고 24°C까지 오르고 겨울에는 최저 18°C까지 내려갑니다. 따라서 사계절 내내 전신 잠수복 착용을 권장합니다.
