Kiribati, gelegen in de glinsterende Stille Oceaan in Micronesië, is de thuisbasis van het grootste zeereservaat in de Stille Zuidzee, het Phoenix Island Protected Area, dat in 2010 werd aangewezen als UNESCO Werelderfgoed en bestaat uit 32 atollen en één koraaleiland.
De belangrijkste eilanden zijn meestal onderverdeeld in drie groepen: de Gilbert Islands, Line Islands, waaronder het bekende Christmas Island, en de Phoenix Islands. Er zijn duikcentra en duikresorts die een scala aan duikcursussen en -trips aanbieden, maar niet in groten getale, wat zorgt voor kleine groepen en rustige duikstekken.
Als je duikt in Kiribati, zul je waarschijnlijk kantduiken en duiken vanuit traditionele outrigger kano's meemaken. Liveaboard duiken is ook een optie, waarmee duikers de beste plekken rond verschillende eilanden kunnen bezoeken.
De belangrijkste duikbasissen zijn Christmas Island en Tarawa. Christmas Island is Kiribati's grootste en bekendste eiland en de thuisbasis van het grootste koraalatol ter wereld. Het trekt veel duikers naar de ongerepte riffen waar veel zeedieren gedijen. Duikers kunnen hier caleidoscopische rifvissen, harde en zachte koralen in regenboogkleuren, draakmeervallen, schildpadden, rifhaaien, manta- en adelaarsroggen en zelfs spindolfijnen verwachten. Van december tot april zie je vaak orka's, dolfijnen en dwergvinvissen. Tussen november en april is het mogelijk om walvishaaien tegen te komen. Op Tarawa atol kun je ook fantastisch duiken en er zijn overblijfselen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog als gevolg van de conflicten in deze periode.

1. Christmas Island

4. Southern Line Islands
The Southern Line Islands are a paradise for advanced divers, with largely unspoiled coral reefs supporting a diverse range of marine life. Scuba diving is recommended to explore the depths fully. 5. Kiritimati Atoll (Freediving Possible)
Kiritimati Atoll, part of the Line Islands, is suitable for both scuba diving and freediving. It offers an easy to advanced adventure level, ideal for exploring its expansive coral reefs and abundant fish species.
