De staat Mexico is een van de 31 staten en grenst aan (ten noorden van) de federale entiteit Mexico-Stad. Deze staat ligt niet aan zee, maar het internationale vliegveld in Mexico-Stad is gemakkelijk te bereiken en de meeste duikbestemmingen liggen op slechts een korte vliegreis. Mexico heeft een groot aantal populaire duikbestemmingen aan de west- en oostkust. Aan de oostkust aan de Stille Oceaan liggen San Carlos, Punta Mita, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Zihuatanejo, Acapulco en Huatulco, met voor de kust de Socorro-eilanden en Guadalupe. Aan de westkust van Mexico met uitzicht op de Golf van Mexico en de Caribische Zee liggen Veracruz, Cancún, Playa del Carmen en Tulum, met voor de kust het eiland Cozumel en Isla Mujeres.
Duikwinkels in de staat Mexico voeren hun cursuswerk en zwembad/geconditioneerd water zelf uit, maar besteden de buitenwater duiken uit aan een van de verschillende kustbestemmingen.

Las Marietas Islands (Nayarit)
This protected wildlife sanctuary offers easy to intermediate scuba and freediving in calm waters filled with nudibranchs, mollusks, sea fans, sponges, and colorful corals. Known for biodiversity, the area also features caves and unique swim-throughs like the Hidden Beach.
Arrecife Alacranes (Yucatán)
Scorpion Reef is a remote coral atoll system great for intermediate to advanced scuba diving. Expect pelagic fish, groupers, barracuda, and healthy coral gardens. It’s part of a biosphere reserve, offering exceptional reef health and low diver traffic for a pristine experience.
Isla San Agustin (Huatulco, Oaxaca)
This site offers intermediate-level scuba diving among dramatic underwater rock formations, including caves, crevasses, and tunnels. Divers encounter reef fish, rays, and sometimes turtles in this geologically fascinating site at the mouth of Bahía de San Agustin.
Roca Partida (Revillagigedo Archipelago)
A world-class site for advanced and technical scuba divers, Roca Partida rises from deep ocean and hosts sharks (silvertip, hammerhead, whale sharks), tuna, and manta rays. Strong currents and deep walls make this a thrilling dive in a UNESCO-listed marine reserve.
Los Morros de Potosí (Guerrero)
Composed of three white granite islets, this site offers easy to moderate scuba and freediving. Beneath the surface lie caves and overhangs, home to sea turtles, moray eels, and colorful reef fish. It’s a scenic and lesser-known spot, perfect for those seeking off-the-beaten-path exploration.
De beste maanden om te duiken in de staat Mexico
In Mexico kun je het hele jaar door duiken, hoewel de omstandigheden per regio verschillen. Kustgebieden zoals de Stille Oceaan en het Caribisch gebied hebben warm water, variërend van 24°C/75°F in de winter tot 30°C/86°F in de zomer. Het zicht varieert meestal van 15-30 meter, vooral rond beschermde riffen en eilanden.
De beste duikmaanden zijn november tot mei, wanneer de zee rustiger is en de stromingen mild. Juni tot oktober brengt warmer water, maar kan samenvallen met orkaanseizoen, vooral aan de Caribische kant, wat de duikschema's beïnvloedt.
