O Aliwal Shoal fica na costa da cidade de Umkomaas, na província de KwaZulu-Natal. O recife em si fica a cerca de 4 km da costa e tem cerca de 1,5 km de largura por 5 km de comprimento. O banco de areia já foi, há muito tempo, uma duna de areia que se fossilizou. A estrutura irregular está repleta de ravinas, saliências e passagens, que agora suportam uma abundância de espécies.
A infraestrutura de Umkomaas está centrada no oceano. Por isso, há muitos centros de mergulho para você escolher. Embora você possa fazer todos os níveis de cursos de mergulho aqui, a cidade é mais popular entre os mergulhadores certificados. Há alguns resorts de mergulho onde você pode fechar acordos de mergulho e estadia. Não há liveaboards devido às condições variáveis e às vezes turbulentas do Oceano Índico.

Você pode mergulhar em Aliwal Shoal o ano todo, mas há mudanças sazonais. As temperaturas do ar permanecem razoavelmente consistentes entre 17°C em julho (inverno local) e 24°C em fevereiro (alto verão). As temperaturas do oceano variam entre 21°C e 26°C anualmente, aquecidas pela corrente de Moçambique que flui para o sul.
Embora se possa supor que o clima mais quente indique uma melhor época para mergulhar, isso não é necessariamente o caso. As chuvas que aumentam durante os meses de verão (novembro a fevereiro) levam o escoamento dos rios para o oceano, às vezes reduzindo a visibilidade.
As condições de vento também variam. Entre junho e agosto, embora a água esteja mais fria, os ventos são fracos e os mares são calmos. Os meses de primavera, entre setembro e novembro, trazem ventos fortes que aumentam a altura das ondas. O mergulho ainda é possível, mas a entrada no barco pode fazer com que você sinta a adrenalina fluir!
