Fedezze fel Kiribatit
A csillogó Csendes-óceánban, Mikronéziában megbúvó Kiribati, a Csendes-óceán déli részének legnagyobb tengeri rezervátumának otthont adó Phoenix-sziget Védett Terület, amelyet 2010-ben az UNESCO Világörökség részévé nyilvánítottak, 32 atollból és egy kiemelkedő korallszigetből áll.
A fő szigetek jellemzően három csoportba sorolhatók: a Gilbert-szigetek, a Line-szigetek, amelyek magukban foglalják a jól ismert Karácsony-szigetet, és a Phoenix-szigetek. Léteznek búvárközpontok és búvárüdülőhelyek, amelyek búvártanfolyamok és kirándulások széles választékát kínálják, de nem nagy számban, ami kis csoportokat és csendes merülőhelyeket eredményez.
Kiribatiban búvárkodás közben valószínűleg partraszállást és hagyományos külső kenuból való merülést fogsz tapasztalni. Az élő fedélzeti búvárkodás is egy lehetőség, amellyel a búvárok a különböző szigetek legjobb helyeit látogathatják meg.
A fő búvárbázisok a Karácsony-sziget és Tarawa. A Karácsony-sziget Kiribati legnagyobb és leghíresebb szigete, és otthont ad a Föld legnagyobb korall-atolljának. Sok búvárt vonz érintetlen zátonyai, ahol burjánzó tengeri fajok élnek. A búvárok kaleidoszkópszerű szirthalakra, szivárványszínű kemény- és lágykorallokra, sárkánymurénákra, teknősökre, szirticápákra, mantákra és sasrájákra, sőt még fonódelfinekre is számíthatnak. Decembertől áprilisig gyakran megfigyelhetők kardszárnyú delfinek, delfinek és csukabálnák. November és április között bálnacápákkal is lehet találkozni. A Tarawa-atoll fantasztikus búvárkodási lehetőségekkel is büszkélkedhet, a második világháborús emlékek mellett, amelyek az ebben az időszakban zajló konfliktusok eredményeként jöttek létre.
