Located in the South of Egypt, just 100km from the border of Sudan, on the coast of the Red Sea, in Egypt, is Berenice. This remote location used to be one of the top picks for liveaboard diving and has now started to grow into a more popular diving destination. It is surrounded by pristine, protected areas which allows for seeing some of the most untouched diving areas in the world. This diving area is still on the rise so there are no big crowds diving here and the people who visit this area all have quite similar mindsets due to its remote location; appreciating nature and what it has to offer, above or below water. There are 47 dive sites to explore in this area.
Great visibility and pleasant water temperatures year-round is what the Red Sea offers divers. There are no extreme weather conditions in this region which cause diving to be affected. The warmest water temperatures are from June to September with an average of 27-28 degrees celsius. The coldest water temperatures only go down to around 20 degrees celsius meaning pleasant diving throughout the year; during the coldest months divers still manage with a 5mm long suit.
The visibility is always in the range of 20-40 metres so enough to see the spectacular underwater world. There are times of the year where the winds pick up which is usually between October and April so this could affect boat trips, but this is not extremely common.
Sha’ab Sataya is famous for its resident pods of spinner dolphins and vibrant coral gardens. It’s an easy dive for all levels and suitable for both scuba and freediving. With calm conditions and 30m+ visibility, it offers a serene encounter with dolphins, colorful reef fish, and occasional turtles.
This isolated reef is rich with soft corals, anthias, jacks, and sometimes barracudas or grey reef sharks. Strong currents and depths over 30m make it an advanced scuba dive. The pinnacle structure and exposed location offer a thrilling drift dive with impressive pelagic sightings.
Sha’ab Claude features unique swim-throughs, arches, and light-filled coral corridors inhabited by butterflyfish, parrotfish, and moray eels. Suitable for easy to moderate-level scuba divers, this site provides a beautiful, maze-like underwater landscape ideal for exploration and photography.
Located on the outer edge of the Sataya reef system, this wall dive descends past 40m and attracts tuna, barracudas, and sometimes oceanic whitetip sharks. It’s a technical-level scuba dive with potential for strong currents. The dramatic drop-off and remote location make it a top site for experienced divers.
Sha’ab Maksour is a long, narrow reef with plateaus on both ends and vertical walls. It’s home to soft corals, fusiliers, and large pelagics like napoleon wrasse and reef sharks. Best for advanced scuba diving, it offers excellent visibility and dramatic underwater topography in a relatively undisturbed marine zone.
