Diving with Spiny Seahorses

Thorny Yet Beautiful

Also known as the thorny seahorse, the spiny seahorse is a medium sized marine fish in the seahorse family that can grow between 15-17cm long. They are most well-known for the thorns that cover their entire body from their prehensile tail all the way up to the top of their foreheads. They eat a carnivorous diet consisting mainly of small crustaceans and zooplankton that they suck up into their tiny mouths, and come in a variety of color from grey to bright yellow and green to red.

They camouflage very well with their environment and are best found on seagrass beds, but can also be seen wrapped around sponges, weedy algae, or soft coral amongst the reef. This species is relatively rare but widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Unfortunately, they have a declining population and are listed as vulnerable, therefore making them hard to find. If scuba diving with the spiny seahorse is on your bucket list check out the locations on the map below for dive sites where they have been sighted.

Dive Sites with this Animal View more on map

★★★★★ Koh Bida Nok

This is one our favourite dive sites since it has the widest range of wildlife. The reef gently slopes down from the island apart from the wall at the south west which drops 22-26 meters.

★★★★☆ Zeelandbrug

Zeeland Bridge can be called the most popular dive site on the Eastern Scheldt. Especially in the sepia season (May-June) this site is very popular among divers from the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany.

★★★★☆ Shark Point

Shark Point is one of Phuket’s most popular dive sites. The three pinnacles of the Shark Point break the surface in a small area. The rest is submerged and covered in soft and hard corals. This is a great drift dive. You can frequently spot leopard sharks and bamboo sharks here, hence the name.

★★★★★ Punta Santa Anna - La Seca

As an extension of Punta Santa Ana we find a large block of granite rock. Its profile of 17 to 3 meters depth is responsible for a good number of shipwrecks that have left us different archaeological remains among which we can still enjoy a few falconetes and cannons of the sixteenth century.

★★★★☆ Diving Center Kostrena

Upon entering the sea there is a plateau ranging from -0,5 m to -12 m of depth (ideal for beginner divers and Discovery dives), after which starts the steep part of the reef which descends to a depth of about -40 m.

★★★★☆ Girandella

Three entrances offer a lot of variety.1: Directly below the Dive Center, here you can dive right or left shoulder. 2:50m N/E before the nudist beach you dive the wall right shoulder and at the marker back to the beach. 3:50m S/W this time dive left shoulder to the marker and back over the reef.
