The cod fish historically refers to the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua); however, the term ’cod’ covers any of the four species of this large, economically important marine fish from the Gadidae family. Cod are cold-water fish common to both sides of the North Atlantic Ocean. You can go diving with cod anywhere from North America’s east coast all the way east to the Baltic and Kara Seas.

Cod like to dwell along the sea bottom near both inshore areas and out toward deep waters. You can recognize cod fish by their three dorsal fins, two anal fins, chib barbel, and dark spots set against a green/gray to brownish skin. Cod can grow relatively large, reaching 1.8 meters (6 feet) long and 91 kg (201 lbs)! This migratory fish prefers to feed on other fish and various invertebrates.
