The idea of Barbados having over 200 shipwrecks littered around its coast should bring a spark to any diver’s eye. Add to that swimsuit warm water and long stretches of coral reefs and scuba diving in Barbados suddenly feels like a must. There are numerous dive centers in Barbados mostly concentrated around the capital of Bridgetown although there are some more spread out along the coast based around hotels as well. These centers offer a variety of dives for different levels and a range of dive courses from beginner to advanced and technical.
Barbados also has a dive resort close to Bridgetown for those who prefer a diving and accommodation package. There are however no liveaboards in Barbados as most of the dive sites are within easy reach of the shore by day boat.
Many of the wrecks in Barbados were sunk as a way to encourage marine life to grow and flourish. By all accounts this has been a roaring success, divers can find so many critters, crustaceans and colourful fish hiding away in every nook and cranny. Octopus, crabs and lionfish can be found hanging out in holes in wrecks and big barracuda often keep you company on the safety stop. Hawksbill turtles are also often seen by divers in Barbados and nest on the island’s beaches. A popular local celebrity is the seahorse, which can be found all around the wrecks of Barbados. These tiny beauties cling to the grassy bottom close to the shipwrecks and reefs
