Though landlocked, Armenia offers surprisingly rewarding freshwater diving set against dramatic mountain scenery. Lake Sevan, one of the world’s largest high-altitude lakes at nearly 1,900 meters above sea level, is the country’s premier dive site. Altitude diving procedures apply, adding a technical dimension to recreational dives. In summer, visibility can reach 10–15 meters, while water temperatures range from 4°C in winter to around 20°C in late season.
Divers explore rocky drop-offs, submerged forests, volcanic formations, and even flooded structures along the shoreline. Armenia also features quarries and reservoirs suited for training, technical practice, and even ice diving in winter. Calm conditions, fewer crowds, and the unique experience of diving in the Caucasus Mountains make Armenia an unexpected and intriguing destination for adventurous divers.
