With the Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx) certification, divers are able to dive with a higher concentration (up to 40%) of oxygen compared to standard air tanks.Why is this beneficial? It means:Longer bottom times. Diving with Nitrox means you absorb less nitrogen which allows you to stay underwater longer as it lengthens your no-decompression limits.Longer repetitive dive times. If undertaking multiple dives in a day, you'll have a longer allowable bottom time on subsequent dives than if you were using air.Shorter surface intervals. Breathing less nitrogen shortens the required “off-gas” time needed between dives which means you can get back in the water quicker.Less fatigue. This last point is up for debate but many divers claim diving on nitrox makes them less tired than diving on air.The Enriched Air Nitrox course is conducted as a dry course and with the eLearning done ahead of time, you can easily take the course alongside your guided dives – meaning there's no need to sacrifice underwater time during your dive holiday.

Knowing how to dive is one thing, but an in-depth understanding of the why behind it is an essential component for a well-rounded dive education. The SSI Science of Diving program provides an extensive study of physics, physiology, and chemistry and how they affect the human body while scuba diving. The course also touches on important things to know about the marine environment and takes a closer look into diving equipment. This specialty is required training for most SSI Professional programs, as well as some Extended Range programs, and is an essential way to expand your dive knowledge. We offer the Science of Diving completely online for those wishing to learn from the comfort of their own home while on those long surface intervals between dive holidays. This can be done one of two ways: 1. Independent Learning: you can purchase the digital kit from us and complete all eLearning and the exam online to earn your certificate completely independently. 2. Virtual Classroom Session: complete the eLearning followed by a virtual Zoom session with one of our Instructors to hear their expertise on the subject and delve further into the course materials. Engaging discussions and questions are encouraged and each Zoom session will be arranged between the Instructor and the student(s) on a date/time that suits all parties. You will be certified as a Dive Guide after successfully completing the Divemaster program. When your interest is to turn your passion into a profession by guiding certified divers, teaching Ecology programs, assisting instructors or even becoming an instructor yourself, your next step is the Divemaster Upgrade with a minimum of 60 logged/verified. Upgrade to Divemaster right away or any time after by self-studying the Science of Diving materials, passing the Digital Final Exam which makes you an SSI Professional.

Becoming an SSI React Right Instructor allows you to train divers and non-divers in emergency rescue techniques, increasing your professional value and teaching scope. This one-day certification is essential for instructors wishing to become Divemaster Instructor and progress beyond.

A specialized decompression diving instructor trains experienced divers to teach others how to safely explore no-decompression limits (NDLs). He teaches them to plan and execute dives requiring mandatory stops, using specialized equipment such as decompression cylinders containing richer gases (e.g. EAN40) and dive computers to manage gas changes and ascents. He bridges the gap between recreational diving and technical diving to explore deeper sites such as wrecks and reefs. To become a Specialty Instructor, you need prior technical certification (such as Decompression Diver/Decompression Procedures) and instructor status. Training focuses on advanced dive planning, emergency protocols and buoyancy control during ascent and team stops.

A Scuba Diving Instructor teaches experienced divers how to plan and execute safe dives on their own, using emergency equipment and advanced self-sufficiency techniques for situations such as photography or underwater exploration. To become an instructor, you must complete instructor-level training with SSI, demonstrate mastery of solo diving techniques (planning, gas management, emergency response) and acquire the teaching skills needed to transmit the essential concepts of autonomous diving.

Becoming an underwater propulsion vehicle (DPV) instructor allows a diving professional to certify students in the use of underwater scooters. Specialization as a diver is a prerequisite.

Aliwal Shoal-Scottburgh South Africa Scottburgh, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa is home to Aliwal Shoal, a breath taking Marine Protected Area with incomparable diversity. Diving pioneer Jacques Cousteau himself, named Aliwal shoal as one of his top ten favourite dive sites in the world. The climate in the Kwa-Zulu Natal is all year 'round tourist friendly and boasts an average of 320 days of sunshine per year. Sea temperatures are also relatively stable, averaging between 21 and 25 degrees all year round, thanks to the warm Mozambique current flowing along the cost. The average visibility on Aliwal Shoal is 12 meters but 30 meters is not uncommon. When diving Aliwal Shoal the adventure starts with your boat ride off Scottburgh beach located on the doorstep of ScubaXcursion dive centre. Enjoy breath-taking encounters with humpback whales and dolphins. The main attraction of Aliwal Shoal is our sharks. The swirling mass of marine life and game fish brings in the predators like few other reefs worldwide, it’s not uncommon to have encounters with as many as 20 Ragged tooth sharks (also called Sand Tiger or Grey Nurse sharks) from May to October. Oceanic Black tips, Zambezi’s and White tip Reef sharks all year round and Tiger sharks during summer months from November to March. View as many as ten different species of Nudibranch on a single dive. Aliwal Shoal is rich in living colour, these delicate jewels of the ocean cannot successfully be kept in aquariums due to their unique dietary requirements and other contributing factors that cannot be mimicked from the ocean. The best way to view Nudibranch alive is in their natural habitat and Aliwal Shoal delivers all that can be expected for the trained eye. The reef structure has more than enough small caves and ledges ideal for rarely seen beauties like the pineapple fish, Tiger angel fish and wide variety of pipefish. This excursion combines diving with a visit to Ras Mohamed National Park on land.Like the explorers of the Sinai in the 70's, we travel to the dive sites by land, but in a more luxurious way than back then, namely with our air-conditioned minibus.PROGRAM:From our dive center or the hotel we start at 8:00 am and reach our first dive site "Shark Observatory" or "Eel Garden" after about 1 hour driving time. Steep wall or canyon, here the experienced divers can enjoy colorful corals and, depending on the season, very large schools of fish.After the dive, we go on a discovery tour and climb the 60-metre-high viewing platform of the Shark Observatory. From up there, we let our eyes wander over the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. We are at the southernmost point of the Sinai Peninsula.We then continue by bus past the salt lake to the mangroves and then reach our second dive site, the canyon in Marsa Bareika. A sandy bay with an easy entrance.We set up camp here and enjoy a barbecue prepared by us after the dive and end the day in a relaxed atmosphere.We will be back at the dive center around 17:00.

In Senegal, the International Waterfowl Census (IWC) has become an official activity coordinated by the National Parks Department with the participation of several partners. The data collected is fed into national and international databases, enabling us to identify trends and threats to wetlands before they turn into disasters. The main objectives of the IWC are: - to estimate the population size of the bird species observed; - to establish the evolutionary trends of the different bird species observed; - to help decision-making on wetland management. These objectives contribute to more effective conservation of Biodiversity in general, and of waterbirds and their habitats in particular. As usual, this activity takes place on January 15 each year at all the sites of the Direction des parcs nationaux. For the Parc des Îles de la Madeleine, the Nautilus makes one of its boats and its team available free of charge to the park rangers who will be carrying out the counting activity.

Dive centers often talk about protecting the ocean while using massive amounts of plastic; at Nautilus Diving Dakar, our March operation aims to be consistent by removing this plastic from the center, a concrete step which should make it possible to avoid around 500 kg of waste per year and show that there are solutions even in emerging countries.
