Shortfin Devil Ray

The shortfin devil ray (Mobula kuhlii) is a widely distributed mobula species found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. It is characterized by its relatively short pectoral fins, compact body, and slender tail, distinguishing it from other devil rays. This agile swimmer inhabits offshore and coastal waters, where it feeds on plankton and small schooling fish using efficient filter-feeding techniques.

Often seen alone or in small groups, the shortfin devil ray is more elusive than some of its larger relatives. It occasionally displays surface activity, including brief leaps, but is less known for large-scale breaching events. Like many mobula rays, it faces threats from fisheries and bycatch, making conservation awareness important to ensure the survival of this lesser-known yet ecologically valuable species.
