Dogfish Shark

Dogfish sharks, including species like the spiny and smooth dogfish, are compact, bottom-dwelling sharks found in cool and temperate waters around the world. Easily recognized by their slender bodies, large eyes, and (in some species) mildly venomous dorsal spines, they are commonly seen resting on the seafloor or cruising close to it.

They feed on small fish, squid, and crustaceans, often hunting at night and schooling in groups. Though small—usually under 1.2 meters—dogfish are agile and play a vital role in local food webs. Divers and snorkelers may spot dogfish in kelp forests, sandy bays, or along rocky ledges. Calm and non-aggressive, they are a favorite among those looking for low-key shark encounters in cooler waters.
