Diving with Blacktip Reef Sharks

Guardians of the Reef

Blacktip reef sharks are one of the most commonly sighted sharks cruising around reefs, as they are extremely abundant in this habitat. They can be found in shallow, inshore waters throughout the tropical regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans and are easily identified by the dark black tips of their dorsal and caudal fins. Blacktips are not very migratory and prefer a smaller home range where they prey on crustaceans, smaller bony fish, and even sea snakes.

Although they are not as easy to approach as their whitetip cousins, they are an exciting and frequently sighted species while diving and snorkeling over warm coral reefs. With their distinct black tips and sleek body line they make for spectacular photo subjects. These animals move so elegantly they seem to be guarding it like watchmen on duty. Although they are one of the most common sharks to see while diving in the Indo-Pacific region, the species has seen significant decline in recent years due to overfishing. ★★★★★ Kottefaru Thila

Great thila with many small overhangs that often serve as shelter for rays, nurse sharks and turtles. Soft corals and extremely many anemones !! Due to its location in a canal, a current must always be expected. We, therefore, recommend having experience with currents or a * special * dive.

★★★★★ Maafaru Caves

Wonderful drift dive in a frenzy of colors. This reef is like an open subway tunnel cut on the side. Soft corals in many different colors hang everywhere in the tunnel. In the middle of the canal, there are coral blocks with a good chance of gray reef shark (when there’s current). The perfect place for a current specialty!

Because of its current, BKT is reserved for experienced divers or is dived in times of low current. Not far from BBT, the rock rises to a depth of 16m. The south side has a nice plateau at 25m and then drops off steeply to 40m. Cleaning station for gray reef sharks!
