Diving with Electric Rays

220 Volts of Electric Power

Electric rays, also known as torpedo rays (or torpedo fish), are a cartilaginous fish in the ray family named for their unique ability to generate an electrical shock. Found worldwide in warm and temperate ocean waters, they use this electric ability for defense and capturing prey, so take caution when diving with electric rays because, although they are very docile, they can be harmful if accidentally touched or stepped on.

They are abundant in numbers but camouflage themselves well in the sand, where they spend most of their time resting or moving slowly while hunting small fish and invertebrates along the ocean floor. They vary in shape, size, and coloration, growing in length from just 30 cm (1 foot) to 2 m (6 feet). There are roughly 60 different species found around the world. Click here to find the most popular areas to dive with them.
