The Schottensee is located directly at the top of the Flüela Pass at an altitude of 2374m above sea level. In Rhaeto-Romanic it is called Lai da la Scotta. The lake, which is about 400m long and 200m wide, belongs entirely to the municipality of Zernez.
The Flüelabach flows out of the Schottensee in the direction of Davos. Along the eastern shore of the Schottensee runs the Flüela Pass road that connects Davos and Zernez.
