Armação dos Búzios, often simply referred to as Búzios, is a captivating diving destination located just a two-hour drive north of Rio de Janeiro. Diving at Búzios is exciting for beginner and advanced divers alike, what with the abundant marine life and reefs to explore. If wreck-diving is what catches your fancy, Arraial do Cabo is just a short car ride away and will impress you with its countless shipwrecks. These wreck sites are suitable for both novice and experienced divers.

Ilha de Ancora (★4.4)

Ilha de Âncora is one of the main diving destinations for divers that frequent the region of Arraial do Cabo, Cabo Frio and Búzios, due to its proximity to the continent and excellent diving conditions. The depth at the points varies from 8 to 30 meters, welcoming beginners and advanced divers.

The best Months to Dive in Armação dos Búzios

There is no bad time of year to dive in Búzios, since the cool upwelled waters from Antarctica transport nutrients to the coast of Búzios and bring with them some incredible marine life along the coast. It is worth noting, however, that the best visibility, up to 25 meters/82 feet, is during the summer (December through February), and that winds can get stronger during the month of May, leading to reduced visibility.

The coast of Búzios is rich in marine wildlife due to the upwelling of cold ocean currents from Antarctica. These cool waters are rich in nutrients, which is what attracts all of the marine life. Groupers, halibut, giant stingrays, anchovies, barracuda, some sea turtles, and corals can be found in these waters.
