Fremantle is a lively port city located 30-minutes southwest of Perth in Western Australia. Situated around Fremantle there are a multitude of wrecks as well as the thriving reefs of Rottnest Island where divers can delight in finning through swim-throughs, caverns, and canyons. Sea turtles, wobbegong shark, and leafy sea dragons all inhabit Fremantle’s waters.
Fremantle diving is possible from the dive centres of Perth, where dive courses from Open Water to Rescue are offered. Several of these dive centres have liveaboards which explore the impressive Ningaloo Reef while Perth is also the main access point for those intending to venture to Rowley Shoals and the Mackerel Islands.

While scuba diving in Fremantle, divers will discover a number of wrecks from the SS Kwinana, an ocean-going cargo and passenger steamship, to the Coogee Maritime Trail, showcasing the Omeo, a premier shore-based shipwreck dive. Also entered from the shore, there are two jetty drives close to Fremantle, the Ammo Jetty and Long Jetty, Here, some fascinating macro-creatures can be found. Taking a boat to Rottnest Island, divers will find limestone reef formations with plenty of swim-throughs, canyons, and caves to enjoy, including Roe Reef and North Point. The Macedon, Denton Holme and Lady Elizabeth Wreck all lie on the seabeds surrounding Rottnest Island.

Around Rottnest Island, sea turtles, leafy sea dragons and lionfish can all be spotted in the limestone walls and sheltering in caves, wobbegong sharks are found taking refuge from choppy seas. Giant groupers patrol sites and crayfish cling to walls while at Fremantle’s wrecks, large schools of batfish have made the artificial reef their home and Port Jackson sharks can be found sleeping inside the hull of ships. During muck dives at jetties, octopi can be seen in cracks and holes manipulating their colour to match their surroundings. Several species of nudibranch mimic features of the jetties sponges and corals while crustaceans, such as pink swimmer crabs and hermit crabs can be seen scuttling along the seabed.

Scuba diving in Fremantle is possible all-year-round. If you are heading on a liveaboard from the area, the season for whale sharks at Ningaloo is from March through to August while manta rays and humpback whales visit the area from June to November. Venturing north to dive the Rowley Shoals Marine Park, liveaboards depart from Broome at only a certain period of the year, from September through to December.
