Explore Ghizo Island

Ghizo Island is home to Gizo, the capital of the Solomon Islands Western Province. Belonging to the New Georgia Islands group, the dive sites of Ghizo Island offer World War II wrecks, numerous offshore reefs, plummeting walls, and abundant marine life beneath the ocean’s surface, while on land the island is lushly forested. Ghizo Island diving takes place from the only dive centre located on land or from liveaboards sailing the region in search of the best sites.

The best Months to Dive in Ghizo Island

Scuba diving in Ghizo Island is possible throughout the year. Despite this, monsoon season from January until April brings a greater chance of rain and windy days. June through to August is a slightly cooler period than the rest of the year, although temperatures are still warm and humid. Water temperatures are comfortable year-round, ranging from 27°C–31°C/81°F–88°F. Manta rays are most frequently seen between November and April.

1. Tao Maru

The Tao Maru, a renowned WWII shipwreck, lies 37 meters deep near Ghizo Island. The site is bustling with marine life, including turtles and rays. It's an advanced scuba diving site due to its depth and historical artifacts such as bombs, a motorbike, and a tank.

2. American Corsair Fighter Plane

This dive site features the wreckage of an American Corsair Fighter Plane at a depth of 27 meters. Suitable for advanced scuba divers, the wreck is in five large pieces and offers a unique underwater exploration experience. Turtles and rays are often seen here as well.

3. Grand Central Station

Known for its incredible biodiversity, Grand Central Station boasts over 270 fish species on a single tank dive, including sharks, trevally, and batfish. Suitable for advanced scuba divers, this site is where currents merge, providing a thrilling and dynamic diving experience.

4. Plum Pudding Island (Freediving Possible)

Plum Pudding Island offers both scuba and freediving opportunities. The site is teeming with coral gardens and small reef fish. It's suitable for easy-level divers, providing a serene and colorful underwater experience ideal for those seeking a less challenging dive.

5. Kennedy Island (Freediving Possible)

Located near Ghizo, Kennedy Island is a picturesque site for both scuba and freediving. Known for its vibrant coral formations and an abundance of small marine life, it offers easy diving conditions, making it perfect for beginners and those looking to enjoy a relaxed dive.
