Though surrounded by land on all sides, there is lots of opportunity to dive in Johannesburg. There are several lakes nearby which are popular with dive courses. It is a definite dive centre culture here, there are no dive resorts or liveaboards.
More advanced, or perhaps technical divers will find there are plenty of shops willing to teach them new underwater skills in this area. Many dive centres also take weekend, or longer, trips to the coast to locations like Sodwana Bay.
Lake, or quarry, diving here is the biggest business in Johannesburg. The lakes, Bass Lake and Miracle Waters, are popular with beginner courses. The sunken artifacts also provide interesting wreck diving. The deeper site of the Wondergat Dolomitic Sinkhole is perfect for deep technical dives. The coast has a lot of diving such as reef, drift, wreck and deep water.
The lakes here do not have an abundance of marine life but they both have a number of native bass and kerber. The coastal waters of Sodwana Bay are some of the richest in South Africa due to the warm tropical currents. There are over 90 different species of corals and sponges and more than 1,200 species of fish. Frogfish, crayfish, potato bass, paper fish and guitar, leopard and ragged-tooth sharks can be found on the reefs. Larger pelagics like humpback whales, whale sharks and black marlin migrate through here, as does the infamous sardine run.

Diving in Johannesburg is possible year round due to its predictable, warm temperatures and protection from the harsh southerly winds. Winter air temperatures are around 19oC and summer temperatures are in the high twenties. The summer months are preferable to dive as the waters are warmer, particularly the lakes, and the coastal waters are calmer.
