Diving in Puerto Rico

The local shore dive site while Puerto Rico diving is the Playa de Amadores. The sheltered bay is ideal for dive courses and those wanting to try diving for the first time. At El Perchel, divers can drift in mild current exploring overhangs while nearby, descend down onto the Cermona II wreck, a 32-metre fishing vessel sitting 20-metres deep. Dive centres in Puerto Rico will transport divers to the incredible site of El Cabron in Arinaga to experience an adventure through caves, arches and tunnels.

Bahia Lila (★4.3)

Bahia Lila is accessible to all dive levels. Even if the dive is not accessible from the shore, it’s only at a short distance fro the shore, just outsite Balito. It guarantees a long and relaxing experience. Here you can find a long rugged wall with small caverns along the bottom.

Alexandria (★4.2)

A long time ago, most fishing boats were from wood. Alexandria a the wreck of a wooden fisher boat sank in the 80s. The main beams are still there but the smaller wood parts have been consumed by the sea.

Balitown (★4.2)

Nice dive site where the lava rocks are corroded so the landscape looks like a little town whereas the sandy parts look as the streets. On one spot a lost fishing net stands up like a Xmas tree.

Sailboat Deep (★4.6)

Sailboat Deep is the wreck of a 40ft sailboat lying at 44meters deep. The hull is completely intact, including the propeller, all the masts are gone. A DEEP specialty is required!

Piper Airplane, wreck (★4.1)

The Piper Cherokee is a small passenger airplane that crashed and sank to 35m in 1996. From the plane, lying on its back, we can recognise the engine, wheels and a small part of the wing.

Balito Princess (★3.9)

Rather simple boat dive, maximum 12mtrs deep, with a nice little wall to dive along. Nice dive for beginners or to use as practice area for re-entries, buoyancy exercises or even a search and recovery.

Bahia Blanca (★3.9)

Bahia Blanca reef, located between the harbour of Puerto Rico and Amadores, shows that a rocky reef in shallow water houses many sealife. It’s an easy descent onto a big rock which then drops gradually down to around 12 meters.

AOW Deep (★4.3)

On the bottom of this 30 meters dive you will find the end of the old (no longer used) drain pipe of Los Caideros. The site is an ideal training site for practicing skills in deeper water. The white sandy bottom typically guarantees a good visibility.

Somewhat more complex dive as it is near the entrance of the port of Puerto Rico. Average 19 meters deep and a mix of artificial and natural elements.

Top Wildlife Sightings in Puerto Rico

Marine life in Gran Canaria is a combination of Atlantic species and Mediterranean species. There are more than 400 resident pilot whales surrounding Gran Canaria, so keep an eye out during surface intervals to see if you can spot one! Divers can expect groupers, stingrays, turtles, mobula rays, moray eels, crabs, angel sharks, dolphins, tuna, and schools of barracuda. Nudibranchs can be seen adorning the corals at reefs and at caves, arches, and swim-throughs; lobsters, crayfish, and conger eels are regularly seen.

The best Months to dive in Puerto Rico

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, to the West of Morocco, the islands enjoy sunshine all-year-round. The absolute best time to dive is said to be from June through to September when summer water temperatures reach around 23℃. In winter the temperature is slightly cooler, ranging from 17℃-18℃ - with diving best-appreciated while donning a 7mm wetsuit!
