The Shiretoko Peninsula is the mecca of ice diving in Japan, and unlike other frozen lakes, it is possible to dive on drift ice, which is one of the rarest in the world. The freshwater from Russia’s Amur River freezes and is swept away by the wind, bringing it to the Shiretoko Peninsula from January to March every year.
You can see the shellless clam, the Hadaka Kamegai (kurione), and its main food source, the swimming clam, the Mizin-Uki-Mai. Although the water temperature is below freezing, crabs, shrimps, nudibranchs, anemones, etc. are abundant in the area. You can also observe fish such as sea lamprey. You can see the famous Rausu kelp in the water.
