The Rip

World famous “The Rip“ Located at the southern tip of Direction Island. Due to the possible strong incoming current, usually only experienced as a snorkel dive. Occasionally with a northern swell entering the lagoon the inward flow may diminish allowing the site to be experienced on scuba.

White tip reef sharks sleeping under the ledge, many spotted sweetlips, maori wrasse, groupers, red bass.

Good for beginners, max depth 12 meters, entry of the beach and around the rocks, two artificial reefs at approx 10 meter depth, best dive are around the rock to the east of the beach.

Flinders Pier (★3.7)

Flinders Pier is the perfect alternative when Port Phillip is blown out due to northerly winds. This site is protected from these winds and is best dived during high tide. There is very little depth at low tide.

Rye Pier (★3.9)

Rye Pier is an L-shaped pier approximately 500 meters long. It was built in 1860 to service the lime trade. The pier points North-Northeast so it is not diveable in strong northerly winds. A long walk to the lower landing located 50 meters from the end of the pier. Much better dive at night as more things come out then.

Blairgowrie Pier (★3.8)

Blairgowrie Pier is located in Camerons Bight on the southern shore of Port Philip between Sorrento and Rye, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. There is so much to see in this constantly changing, colorful environment across all of the different habitat types.

Portsea Hole (★4.0)

Portsea Hole is about 500m from the Portsea Pier and is a remnant of the old Yarra River. The top of the hole is at 14m and to the north there is a vertical wall approximately 75m(250ft) long which drops to sand at 27m (90ft), then into a sand bowl which bottoms at 33m(110ft).

Lonsdale Bommies (★4.2)

Discovered and named by one of the great local diving legends, this dive site is spectacular. Approximately 1 kilometer from the Point Lonsdale Light and clear of the shipping channel, just outside Port Phillip Heads, is an amazing area of bommies, or underwater rock formations.

Foggy Reef (★4.3)

Foggy Reef sits at the southern-most end of the Lonsdale wall system. The top of the wall is a great dive for beginners as it is around 8 meters deep. If you swim northeast you will find the edge of the wall. This site is part of the Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park.

Castle Rock (★4.4)

Castle Rock is located outside the Port Phillip Heads in approximately 18 metres of water. It sits on a sandy bottom and rises to around 12 metres. The rock is around 200m in circumference, has many overhangs, walls and swimthroughs, and can be circled several times in a dive.

The Plateau (★4.3)

This is a dive in the middle of the Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park. The plateau is a huge rocky platform in around the 16-meter range winding its way around the edge of the platform. This is the deepest water in Victoria, originally part of the river Yarra.

Eliza Ramsden, wreck (★4.2)

Constructed in Glasgow Scotland in 1874 for Samuel Ramsden of Melbourne and named after his wife, this ship cost 10,000 pounds. She was a three-masted iron barque 151 ft long and 27 ft wide with a gross tonnage of 415 tons. The vessel sunk in 1875 on her first voyage out of Melbourne when she struck Corsair rock.

Devil’s Drop Off is one of the Melbourne’s most popular dive sites onits famous Lonsdale Wall. Devil’s Drop Off begins with a large drop-off from around 12 to 30 metres and continues with many ledges, overhangs and swim throughs.

Spectacular Reef (★4.3)

Spec Reef (aka Spectacular Reef) is part of the former Yarra River bed and lies in the South Channel, Port Phillip, Victoria. It is, therefore, subject to shipping traffic. The area is quite large and offers many different dive sites.

Captain Nitros' Drop-off (★4.2)

The Drop-off is located on the western end of Spectacular Reef, and consists of a series of walls thatplunge to over 60 meters in 5-10m increments. This makes it a great dive for all levels. Huge boulders the size of houses are scattered over the area, lying where the ancient Yarra River deposited them.

Boarfish Reef (★4.3)

Situated in the famous Sponge Gardens, Boarfish Reef lies approximately halfway between Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. It starts in approximately 10 metres of water and gradually increases in depth to around 22 metres in a system of interesting rock formations and overhangs and swim-throughs.

The Grotto (★4.3)

The Grotto is named after the many small caves and large overhangs that form this site. Located on top of the Lonsdale Wall system, this area is teeming with marine life and a photographers dream. This site gradually increases in depth to around 23 metres in a system of interesting rock formations and overhangs.

Pope’s Eye is a sandy shoal with a partially completed bluestone fortification called the Annulus. It was to be the foundation of an island fort in the 1880’s to protect the bay.

Cottage By The Sea (★4.1)

Easy shore dive access. Quick walk from the car park into water. Depth 6-9m to ledges and swim throughs. Can be affected by swells and currents so divers must be cautious.

First built in the 1850s, Mornington Pier and Jetty is a regularly used dive training site and a relaxing after work night dive site for many Melbourne based divers. A site which is usually diveable when the wind is up just a bit.

St Leonards Pier (aka St Leonards Jetty and Breakwater) is rated as the best pier dive on the Bellarine Peninsula. With plenty of colour and growth on the pylons, this dive site is well worth a visit day or night either diving or snorkelling. Great site for macro photography.

The Ozone Shipwreck (★4.0)

The Ozone wreck is located off the coast of Indented Head, Victoria, Australia . It is a retired Port Phillip paddle steamer that was sunk in 1925 to form a breakwater The wreckage of the Ozone remains visible about 50 meters offshore at Indented Head and is an easy shallow dive 3. It is a distinctive landmark.

Mordialloc Pier, located on Beach Road lays at the entrance to Mordialloc Creek, and is fairly close to Melbourne and has similar marine life to Mornington Pier, but not nearly as interesting.

Gouldens Sinkhole (★4.0)

Typical area limestone sinkhole. Drops down to about 20 meters at maximum depth. Only CDAA certified divers and students all allowed to dive here. Best cave training site in the area.

Hauler Wreck (★4.2)

The Hauler wreck is a tug purposely sunk for diving in 1979. This is conducted as a boat dive only and is exposed to easterly and northerly weather. Divers should either be undertaking advanced training, or qualified (Deep-30m) for deeper dives.

Diving the Navy Warf is a relatively easy entry/exit dive. Majority of the dive could be spent exploring the pylons under the warf. Sandy bottom with patches of seaweed to the left (West)of the warf.

Easy Entry - Giant stride or fall in. Max depth 16m. Site is on the southern side of the headland and faces south, best with no swell or larger swells and wind coming from the north.
