Blue Maomao

The blue maomao (Scorpis violacea) is a small, fast-moving reef fish found throughout New Zealand’s northern coastlines. Easily recognized by its electric-blue color and oval shape, it forms tight, swirling schools over rocky reefs and drop-offs. These fish are common at dive sites like the Poor Knights Islands, where they gather in large numbers, creating a mesmerizing underwater spectacle.

Their diet of plankton and small particles makes them frequent mid-water feeders, often seen darting just below the surface in calm, clear conditions. Non-aggressive and highly photogenic, blue maomao are a favorite among underwater photographers and snorkelers, contributing color and movement to nearly any temperate reef dive in New Zealand.
