What makes them truly fascinating is their mouthbrooding behavior. After mating, the male carries the fertilized eggs—and sometimes even newly hatched juveniles—in his mouth, protecting them until they’re ready to swim freely. Observing this rare act of underwater parenting is a rewarding moment for patient divers. Cardinalfishes display a variety of patterns, from bold stripes to translucent bodies, and often reflect dive lights with their striking eyes. Whether on a dusk dive or peeking under coral, these tiny guardians offer a glimpse into the intricate and hidden dramas of reef life.
