Razorfish

The razorfish (Aeoliscus strigatus), also known as the shrimpfish, is a slender, tropical reef species famous for its vertical swimming posture. Found throughout Indo-Pacific coral reefs, it hovers head-down, gliding in tight, synchronized groups that mimic sea grass, coral, or even long-spined sea urchins for protection. With a body shaped like a razor blade and encased in armor-like transparent scales, this species is an expert at camouflage and stealth.

Razorfish feed on tiny planktonic organisms, often drifting near the reef or hiding among urchins until it’s safe to emerge. Divers and snorkelers may spot them in lagoon shallows, coral gardens, or near urchin colonies, where their unusual behavior and coordinated movement make for a mesmerizing and surreal wildlife encounter. Their shy, graceful presence offers a unique highlight on any tropical reef dive.

Kalipayan is a wall dive located close to Alona Beach-Bohol Panglau within 4-5 minutes to the closest dive centers. The dive begins in a sandy aera at five meters and then proceeds by dropping over the vertical wall.

Location: In front of Juara Scuba Academy dive center. Can walk straight off the beach and dive into underwater experiences; Depth: 8m; Current: Sometimes mild current; Site: Sandy bottomed bay ranging between 2 - 5 m which moves into shallow fringing reefs.
