Total number of species approx.: 8

Remoras, or suckerfish, are fascinating marine companions known for attaching themselves to larger animals like sharks, rays, turtles, and whales using a specialized suction disc on their heads. This allows them to ride effortlessly through the water, gaining protection and feeding on scraps or parasites. They are found in warm, tropical oceans and are often seen by divers and snorkelers near reefs or open water when large marine life is present.

Their torpedo-shaped bodies and pale coloring help them blend in, but spotting one cruising alongside its host is always memorable. Though their lifestyle might appear parasitic, remoras are generally harmless or even helpful, sometimes cleaning their hosts. Watching one in action offers a unique look at marine symbiosis and the hidden relationships that define life beneath the surface.
