Surfperch are coastal fish found along the Pacific shoreline, especially in North America. They live in the energetic surf zone, where waves break over sandy beaches, and are specially adapted to thrive in these constantly moving waters.

Unlike many fish, surfperch give birth to live young instead of laying eggs. Their diet varies by species, from hard-shelled mollusks and crustaceans to small amphipods and bryozoans, making them important feeders in nearshore ecosystems.
