Fun Dive

Diving in the Tiputa Pass in Rangiroa (French Polynesia) is a legendary experience, often described as one of the most beautiful pelagic spectacles on the planet. The ultimate adventure there is drift diving with the incoming current, where the ocean surges powerfully into the lagoon.

Here is the immersive account of this extraordinary experience.

The Big Leap into the Blue (L'Éolienne)

It all begins on the RIB. As we approach the entrance to the pass, we can see the impressive waves formed by the current. The instructor’s briefing is clear: the entry is a simultaneous “backward roll,” followed by a quick descent into the blue to avoid being swept away on the surface.

You kick your fins toward the bottom, stabilizing at a depth of 25 to 30 meters. The visibility is crystal clear—typical of ocean waters—offering an endless view. It is here, in the vast blue expanse, that the first local residents appear: the bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) of Tiputa. Playful and accustomed to divers, they regularly swim just a few meters away from you, settling into the current to observe you or seek interaction.

L'Angle and the "Shark Wall"

The current is now pushing you toward the entrance to the pass. You reach a strategic area called “The Angle.” This is where predators gather, facing the current, to hunt.

As you look up toward the bottom of the pass (which drops to 45–50 meters), you’ll witness the highlight of the show: the famous shark wall. Dozens, sometimes hundreds, of gray reef sharks swim effortlessly with the current. Amid this impressive ballet, you’ll encounter gigantic dogtooth tuna, compact schools of barracuda forming a silvery vortex, and majestic, curious Napoleon fish.

(Depending on the season—particularly from November through March—the great hammerhead shark also prowls these depths, drawn by schools of leopard rays.)

The Great "Flight" and the Shelter of the Canyons

The current is definitely picking up. You’re entering the channel proper. Now is the time to turn off your fin motor, cross your arms, and savor the pure sensation of underwater flight. The landscape is flying by at breakneck speed.

Whether you want to catch your breath or observe the marine life, the guide directs you to the canyons. These natural rock formations cut into the bottom of the pass and offer perfect shelter from the underwater current:

  • In the canyons: We pause for a few moments to admire sea turtles resting peacefully, giant moray eels, and dense schools of triggerfish or surgeonfish.
  • The Drop-Off: At the guide’s signal, you leave the canyon and are propelled by the current toward the next one. An adrenaline-pumping ride.

A Return to Tranquility at Motu Nuhi Nuhi

As you venture deeper into the atoll, the strength of the current weakens. The water subtly changes color, shifting from the deep blue of the ocean to the milky turquoise of the lagoon.

The dive ends gently around the small islet of Nuhi Nuhi, often called “the Aquarium.” The safety stop takes place above a coral garden teeming with a multitude of small, colorful tropical fish. Whitetip sharks sleep peacefully on the white sandbanks. You ascend to the surface, eyes wide open, after experiencing one of the wildest and most memorable drift dives of your diving life.
