Isla Fuerte 2024 coral reef reproduction monitoring

1st season: August 24 to 27, 2024. 2nd season: September 23 to 26, 2024. 3rd season: October 22 to 25, 2024. Coral reef reproduction is a natural phenomenon that occurs only once a year. In which, in a synchronized manner, the coral colonies of the same species, release to the sea, in an ascending rain, the small spheres containing their sexual cells. This is the sexual form of Polypo coral reproduction and ensures that new colonies are formed, in the right places, to grow the coral cover of the reef. During the nights of the warmest months of the sea: August, September and October, responding to the lunar cycle, 6 days after the full moon of each month, each of the different coral species that make up the reef are synchronized to, in a second, throw into the sea their packets of sex cells. During this monitoring, we will explore the reef on the days and times when, according to what has been studied by the scientific community in previous years, there is a greater probability of witnessing such a spectacular event. We will not only witness the reproduction of corals, this is also synchronized with that of other invertebrates such as sponges and echinoderms. We will learn about the conformation of the reef and its importance in our planet and enjoy the charms of night diving.

Requirements

For this plan, the diver must be certified as an Advanced Open Water diver or must have the night diving module logged and signed off by an instructor in their logbook. If they do not have it, they can take this specialty directly with us at the Ecolodge for an additional cost of $375,000
