Marine mammal interactions are common in these waters. Divers frequently encounter seals and sea lions, with young sea lions in particular displaying curiosity by approaching or following divers. Dolphins and whales are also often spotted from the boat.
The underwater environment is exceptionally diverse. Common marine life includes sheephead, calico bass, halibut, garibaldi, ling cod, vermilion, numerous species of rockfish, opaleye, several varieties of perch, giant black sea bass, horn sharks, angel sharks, and various rays. Invertebrates such as lobsters, scallops, mussels, multiple types of abalone, eels, nudibranchs, sea fans, snails, sea cucumbers, sea hares, starfish, sea urchins, octopus, and numerous shellfish are abundant. Eel grass meadows, kelp forests, and a wide array of anemones also contribute to the vibrant ecosystem.
The specific creatures and sights encountered can vary greatly depending on the dive site and the diver’s chosen path. Each island boasts unique geology, featuring cave systems, arches, swim-throughs, towering rock formations, and sheer walls, ensuring a dynamic and ever-changing underwater landscape.
