SSI Deep Diving Specialty
Explore deeper. Expand your limits. Discover a whole new underwater world!
Ready to take your diving adventures to the next level? The SSI Deep Diving Specialty is designed to give you the knowledge, skills, and confidence to safely explore deeper dive sites, reaching depths of up to 40 metres (130 feet).
Discover deeper reefs, fascinating underwater landscapes, and marine life that you might not encounter in shallower waters.
During this course, you'll work closely with your SSI instructor to develop the techniques and knowledge needed to plan and execute deeper dives safely.
What will you learn?
Understanding Deep Diving
Discover how increased depth affects your body, equipment, air consumption, and available bottom time. Learn why careful planning becomes increasingly important as you descend deeper.
Deep Dive Planning
Learn how to plan dives within recreational limits, calculate your available bottom time, establish safe depth limits, and prepare appropriate emergency procedures.
Gas Management & Air Consumption
Understand how your breathing gas consumption increases with depth and learn to calculate your gas requirements, monitor your supply, and establish safe turn pressures.
Recognising Nitrogen Narcosis
Learn about the effects of nitrogen narcosis, how to recognise its symptoms, and what to do if you or your buddy experience them.
Buoyancy Control at Depth
Practise maintaining neutral buoyancy at greater depths, where changes in pressure and equipment compression require careful adjustments.
Safe Descents & Ascents
Develop controlled descent and ascent techniques, including proper equalisation, monitoring ascent rates, and completing safety stops.
Understanding No-Decompression Limits
Learn how depth affects your no-decompression limits, how to use your dive computer effectively, and why staying within your planned limits is essential.
Emergency Procedures
Practise responding to potential deep-diving emergencies, including low-air situations, buddy separation, and other challenges associated with deeper dives.
What does the course involve?
Digital Learning
Complete your SSI theory materials covering deep-diving physiology, dive planning, gas management, equipment considerations, and safety procedures.
Dive Planning & Preparation
Work with your instructor to plan each dive, establish depth and time limits, calculate gas requirements, and discuss emergency procedures.
3 Open-Water Training Dives
Complete three progressively deeper training dives under the supervision of your SSI instructor. Practise buoyancy control, depth awareness, gas management, navigation, and safe ascent procedures.
Training dives are conducted within your applicable depth limits and local diving conditions.
SSI Deep Diving Specialty Certification
Upon successful completion, receive your SSI Deep Diving Specialty certification, allowing you to plan recreational dives to a maximum depth of 40 metres, subject to your training, experience, and local regulations.
Who can join?
The SSI Deep Diving Specialty is available to certified divers who are at least 15 years old and meet the applicable SSI training prerequisites.
You don't need to be an expert diver, but you should be comfortable with your basic diving skills and ready to expand your experience.
