Would you like to explore more of Bonaire during your dive and cover greater distances underwater? With the SSI DPV Diving Specialty, you’ll learn to dive safely and in a controlled manner using a Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV), also known as an underwater scooter.
A DPV allows you to cover greater distances with less effort. This enables you to explore more of a dive site and reach interesting spots you might not otherwise visit during a normal dive.
At Scuba School Bonaire, you’ll take the course in a private setting. You’ll learn exclusively with your own family, friends, or dive buddies. With a maximum of 2 students per instructor, you’ll receive personalized attention and plenty of space to practice the skills at your own pace.
How does the course work?
The SSI DPV Diving Specialty consists of online theory and practical training in open water.
You’ll start with the SSI theory, which you can complete largely online and at your own pace. Among other things, you’ll learn how a DPV works, how to use a scooter safely, and how to prepare for and plan a dive with a DPV.
Then you’ll head into the water with your instructor. During the practical training, you’ll learn step by step how to safely use, maneuver, and control the DPV.
What you’ll learn:
- What a Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV) Is and How It Works
- How to Check and Prepare a DPV for a Dive
- How to Safely Start, Stop, and Maneuver with a DPV
- How to Control Speed and Distance Underwater
- How to Maintain Your Trim and Buoyancy While Using a DPV

DPV Diving on Bonaire
Bonaire is a great place to discover diving with a DPV. The coast offers many different dive sites, and underwater, you can cover significantly greater distances with a scooter.
During the training, we’ll choose the location and training program based on your experience, the conditions, and the skills you want to develop.
You plan each dive together with your instructor. In doing so, we consider factors such as the route, dive time, air consumption, battery life, and any points of concern regarding the chosen dive site.
Private training at your own pace
No large groups or one-size-fits-all approach. At Scuba School Bonaire, you train privately or in small groups, with a maximum of 2 students per instructor.
This means more personal attention, room for questions, and enough time to become familiar with using the DPV.
Additional guided DPV dive
Would you like to practice further after the course or take a longer trip with a DPV? You can book an additional guided DPV dive with your instructor.
Together, we’ll plan a route that matches your experience and certification, so you can further explore the freedom of DPV diving under personal guidance.
