Discover a whole new world just beneath the surface. École de Plongée Sétoise welcomes you year-round in Sète, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Thau Lagoon, for accessible dives rich in local marine life encounters: try dives from age 8, guided explorations, freediving, and snorkeling. You also come here to observe iconic local species up close—sometimes very close—such as seahorses and nudibranchs.

The center is run by Olivier and Arnaud: Olivier is a marine biologist and commercial diver, as well as an experienced scuba diver and freediver; Arnaud has been working at the center for 15 years and knows the dive sites inside out. We are a human-scale club: we deliberately keep groups small to guarantee attentive supervision, real individual follow-up, and strong skill progression. Ideal for beginners: calm shallow sites, step-by-step learning, with “comfort and mastery” as the priority before going further.

As an SSI Training Center, we offer a wide range of courses and specialties: Basic Diver, Open Water Diver, Deep Diving and Wreck Diving specialties, as well as marine-biology oriented programs (including identification outings and workshops: nudibranchs, sessile life, behavior, and ecosystems). We are also a freediving center, with introductions and regular static and dynamic training sessions. And we know how to run full-day experiences: multi-tank days (two dives or more depending on the plan), group meals, briefings and mini marine-biology talks, club/company group outings, private charters, and tailored projects.

Enjoy a variety of sites: sea dives along the cliffs of Sète and lagoon dives in the Thau Lagoon, with options for all levels (including accessible wrecks). The center is located in the marina at the entrance of Port des Quilles (easy parking opposite, quick access from Montpellier), with the boat directly in front to minimize handling. On site: a 16 m³/h air station, cylinders and equipment in a wide range of sizes, exposure suits adapted to local conditions, changing facilities, and free parking a few minutes’ walk away. On the SSI side, you also benefit from MySSI: digital materials, progress tracking, logbook and certification cards in the app.

Frequently Serviced Dive Sites

École de Plongée Sétoise, 34200 Sète

☆☆☆☆☆ Ponton de la bordelaise

From the entry near the small lighthouse, follow the shoreline and pass under the Lafarge quay (Bordelaise pontoon) between the pillars, then return along the opposite bank: sheltered route, shallow depth.

★★★★☆ Le décapsuleur

At the base of the cliff, in a small cove beneath the monument known as “Le Décapsuleur,” you explore a very shallow rocky plateau (~1 m) followed by arches and crevices along the wall. Boat access only; exposed to SE winds. Ideal for practicing buoyancy control and navigation.

★★★★★ Le planier

A small coastal trader that sank off Sète on March 3, 1905 after a collision. Lying on sand at 18 m, about 25 m long, and split into two sections separated by roughly 10 m.

☆☆☆☆☆ Théatre de la mer

An easy, boat-access dive site: sandy bottom around 5 m, then a rocky ledge and boulders—often in clear water. Two artillery pieces can be seen on the site (a large cannon on the ledge, a machine gun on the sand).

☆☆☆☆☆ Les patates

Three rocky “patates” created during the renovation works of Sète’s breakwater: rocks dumped offshore forming three small mounds on a bottom around 14 m. Simple route by circling each mound.

Abyss Plongée, 34300 Cap d’Agde

★★★★☆ Epave de l’Obéron

The Oberon Wreck is set on a 12m sand bottom, away from Marseillan. 28m long, this old ship sunk during a tempest on February 18th 1913. This wreck, still in correct condition, is perfect for beginners or submarine photographers.

☆☆☆☆☆ Le jardin

A wide, shallow rocky site made for calm exploration: slabs, small caves and plenty of natural shelters. Great for long, relaxed dives and for building confidence.

Mares

★★★★☆ Brise-lames

Just outside Sète’s harbour, the old submerged breakwater forms a long rocky ridge. A simple route follows the blocks to explore the encrusting life and fish activity; be mindful of boat traffic and sea conditions near the port entrance.
