Cartagena is a port city in the region of Murcia on the south east coast of Spain. This is also a naval base and is known for its rich Roman history. There is a wide selection of diving to be done here which caters to divers of all interests. There are multiple dive centres and dive resorts which will take divers diving from shore at the multiple shore dive sites or out on the boats for those sites further out. Whether it’s wrecks, rocky reefs, caves, marine critters or schools of fish, there are many experiences to be ticked off any divers bucket list here, and all that in combination with, in general, calm water conditions and 300 days of sun a year, this should be on any divers list of diving destinations.

Diving in Cartagena

Spain has four seasons and the temperature does significantly differ between summer and winter, however, the temperatures never drop down to extremes. Air temperatures do range a significant amount; between 10 degree Celsius in January to 26 degrees Celsius in August. The water temperatures range between 15 in winter and 26 degrees Celsius in summer. Visibility is above average throughout the year, between 10 and 25 metres and more on the best days. The species which inhabit these waters are here throughout the year.

Top Wildlife Sightings in Cartagena

The large array of underwater rocky topography have multiple patches which are encrusted in different types of corals including Hard Corals, Soft Corals, Anemones and Gorgonians. These corals combined with nutrient rich waters attract a vast collection of marine species such as schools of Barracuda and Tuna, Moray Eels and Octopus who like to hide in the many cracks and crevices, Hermit Crabs, Scorpion Fish and Shrimp living among these corals, Groupers gliding along, majestic Seahorses and adorable Nudibranchs. On the luckiest days, divers could spot the elegant Sea Turtles feeding or the graceful Eagle Rays who fly by out in the blue. Another highlight of the area are the unique Mola Mola, or otherwise known as the Sun Fish, which is on many divers bucket lists.
