Oceanic Blacktip Shark

Not to be confused with the blacktip reef shark, the oceanic blacktip shark has a more stout, robust body, grows larger than its reef shark cousin, and prefers living in shallower open water areas rather than on a coral reef. Also, they do not have distinct black spots on their fin tips like the reef sharks but, instead, have more of a uniform black line along the edges of their fins. These animals are fast, agile, and energetic, especially when it comes to hunting. They have been known to make spinning leaps out of the water while attacking schools of fish.

This is one our favourite dive sites since it has the widest range of wildlife. The reef gently slopes down from the island apart from the wall at the south west which drops 22-26 meters.

This site is named Castle because of its pinnacles and castle like structures with swim throughs, gullies, and overhangs to explore. Maximum depth is 25m and the top of the reef is 12m deep.

Chunnel (★4.4)

This is a dive site for everyone, it has three main features – a pinnacle that spirals rapidly up towards the surface, an overhang that provides a sheltered hiding place for many of the shoal’s shier residents, and the famous Chunnel Cave.

Budaine (★4.3)

There are a number of diving spots around Kamikimoto Island, an uninhabited island off the coast of Shimoda. It is a 20-minute boat ride from the harbor to the dive site. It is a popular spot for hammerhead sharks to appear from summer to autumn when the Kuroshio Current approaches the Izu Peninsula.

Raggies Cave is a large overhang with a swim-through and is renowned for the sand tiger sharks that congregate here during winter and spring. The maximum depth is 18m, with an average depth of 11m.

This dive site has a minimum diving qualification of Advanced Open Water diver as the maximum depth is 27m and is only accessible by boat. Due to its depth, it is not suitable for beginner divers.

León Dormido, a gigantic rock formation rising out of the ocean, is a “sleeping lion.” The remains of a lava cone split in two, it is also known as “Kicker Rock.” Located off the coast of the island of San Cristóbal.

It is a dive for advanced divers with multiple logged dives and experience in deep diving, as you will be spending a lot of time in the blue water hanging at around 30m. The dive is in the middle of the ocean though you may start from the reef. High boat traffic. DSMB is a must.

Gordon Rocks, Galapagos (★4.5)

Near to the Santa Cruz Island and also known as the “washing machine”, you find the Gordon Rocks. Due to currents and upwellings, this dive site is suitable for advanced divers. On this site you will see hammerhead sharks and the famous oceanic sunfish (mola mola).

Stingray City is quite misleading for a place where Nurse Shark dominate - Several separate coral block in depth from 15 to 3 are located in a small lagoon close to Embudu Channel.

During early summer, hammerhead sharks gather in large schools at this location, circling repeatedly in a captivating manner. Divers can enjoy extended observation periods as the sharks navigate around roots or rest on rocks.

Madi Miyaru Kanmathi (★4.6)

5 min from Hulhumale Jetty, an extensive reef. It’s a steep slope starting at 3-5m down to 25m, and then where it has a sandy bottom at 30m+. the further you got away from the the reef the deeper it gets. This dive site normally doesn’t have current. Please use an SMB when ascending as there is alot of boat traffic.

Oceanics Sharks Secret point (★4.6)

This dive involves feeding at a depth of approximately 24 meters to attract pelagic sharks (tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks, bull sharks, spinner sharks, guitarfish, rays, etc.). The dive follows the artificial breakwater wall in the Hulumale lagoon, with divers sitting in a semicircle. Discovered in October 2020.

This is an advanced dive site with 30m depth and more. The point of entry is at Shelley Beach with a boat ride of approximately 6km.

Inside Edge - Aliwal Shoal (★4.5)

The inside edge of Aliwal Shoal rises from the sand forming a fantastic landscape of pinnacles, gullies, swim-throughs, and caverns. Some of the best diving in Africa is found on the Aliwal Shoal. It is home to a diverse array of marine life.

One of the most famous dive sites around. Just some rocks and some trees above the surface, but put your face in the water and you will experience a pure tropical aquarium.

Irufushi House Reef (★4.3)

The reef has a gentle slope that descends to a sandy bottom at a depth of 18 meters. This depth makes it ideal for beginners making their first open water dives, as well as for divers conducting their check dives.

This is a long channel dive site in the northeast corner of the atoll. Here you can expect strong currents as well as high seas when the weather is rough. A great spot for large fish species.

This dive site starts as a wall dive and leads into the channel, here you can enter the channel to enjoy a deeper dive or stay on the drop off point of the channel where you can enjoy all the fish life in the current.

The Canyon dive site is located off the mysthical Ōpūnohu Bay in Moorea. The underwater life is varied : anemones with clown fish, turtles or even black tip sharks.

Faro (★4.4)

The special thing about Faro is that it has both, shallower areas at the ends that allow easy entry, and a wonderful reef that descends to depths of around 30 meters, which can be explored if the current allows it. Most common to see big sharks!
