Forkbeard

The forkbeard (Phycis phycis) is a deep-reef fish found in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, known for its elongated body, forked tail, and chin barbels. It typically stays near the seafloor, hiding in crevices or under ledges by day. More often seen during night dives or at depth, forkbeards emerge after dark to forage for small fish and invertebrates.

Though not brightly colored, their unique appearance and behavior make them a rewarding sight for divers exploring rocky drop-offs and temperate reefs. With their secretive nature and subtle beauty, forkbeards offer a glimpse into the lesser-known world of deeper marine life, especially appreciated by experienced divers and underwater photographers.
