New Zealand Blue Cod

The New Zealand blue cod (Parapercis colias) is a benthic reef fish found throughout the country’s coastal waters, especially in the South Island and offshore islands like Stewart and Chatham Islands. Despite the name, it is not a true cod, but is easily recognized by its bluish-green coloring, thick lips, and elongated body.

Blue cod are often seen resting on sandy or rocky bottoms, but are also known for their curious behavior—sometimes following divers closely. They feed on crabs, worms, and small fish, often rooting through rubble or algae. Calm and approachable, blue cod are a favorite sight for divers and snorkelers exploring New Zealand’s temperate reef systems, especially in areas with less current and more rocky structure.
