Total number of species approx.: 50

Stargazer fish are one of the ocean’s most unusual and well-camouflaged predators. With their upward-facing eyes, buried bodies, and sometimes venomous spines or electric organs, these fish lie in wait just beneath the sand—ready to ambush unsuspecting prey that swims overhead. Found in tropical and temperate seas, including the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Indo-Pacific regions, stargazers prefer sandy or muddy bottoms near reefs, lagoons, or drop-offs. They are rarely seen by snorkelers, but scuba divers exploring the seafloor slowly and attentively may be rewarded with a glimpse of their face peeking up through the substrate.
