Open Water Instructor Evaluation

Once you complete the Instructor Training Course (ITC), you’re ready for the Instructor Evaluation (IE)—the final milestone on your path to becoming an SSI Open Water Instructor. Passing the IE unlocks the ability to independently teach some of SSI’s most essential programs, including Scuba Diver, Open Water Diver, Enriched Air Nitrox, Diver Stress & Rescue, and Dive Guide.  This will allow you the freedom to lead and inspire divers at every level!

Candidate Prerequisites:

• You must be at least 18 years old to enroll. • A minimum of 75 logged open‑water dives and at least 50 hours underwater ensures you have the experience needed for this level. • You’ll need SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 40 and Divemaster certifications—or equivalent qualifications from another recognized agency. • You must also hold an active‑status SSI Assistant Instructor certification (or equivalent) before beginning this program.

Duration

• The full program typically requires 72–85 hours to complete. • Your instructor will tailor the schedule—class frequency, daily hours, and training sessions—to match your experience, learning pace, and local diving conditions. • Once you complete the Instructor Training Course, you’re ready to move on to the Instructor Evaluation. • The Instructor Evaluation must take place within six (6) months of finishing the ITC to keep your progress on track.
