Explore Abu Nuhas
Located two hours north of Hurghada, off the coast of the Red Sea in Egypt is Abu Nuhas, a ship graveyard and a wreck diving dream come true. Abu Nuhas translates to ‘Father of Badluck’ and with good reason, this submerged reef has been the cause of at least five ships to have sunk. There are four wrecks which are accessible for recreational divers; Carnatic, Giannis D, Chrisoula K and Kimon M. Divers diving at Abu Nuhas can penetrate these wrecks and swim through their history while also being surrounded by a colourful and exciting marine ecosystem.

It won’t be surprising that wreck diving is the main reason divers want to visit this dive area, and wrecks are what they will get! Recreational and Technical divers can swim around and over these wrecks, but some are also accessible and divers can explore what they have to offer. These dive sites are only accessible by liveaboards and by day trips boats sent out from dive centres and dive resorts from either Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh. Due to currents here, there can be moments of drift diving which divers do need to be prepared for.

Abu Nuhas is truly is a wonderland of wrecks. However, aside from the impressive wrecks, the fact that they have been underwater for so long, means they have created their own ecosystems made up of a variety of corals and an assortment of marine life. The encrusted wrecks covered in corals attract multiple marine species including Stonefish, Scorpion Fish, many brightly coloured Nudibranchs, Octopus and Giant Moray Eels, and that is just to name a few. It is not a destination for divers who want to see large marine species, but with wrecks this spectacular, divers won’t miss them.

The best Months to dive in Abu Nuhas
The Red Sea is known for many things, including the great diving conditions year-round. During the winter months of December to February, divers can comfortably dive with a 5 mm suit and hood in waters around 20 degrees Celsius, in the summer the water temperature rises to 29 degrees Celsius. The visibility here is really great with an average of 20 metres, with 40 plus on the best days. The only factor which can affect diving is wind, there are days where the wind and currents can pick up, but diving professionals of the area will always assess the dive site thoroughly before making a final decision.
