Rome is the capital city of Italy and the Lazio region, renowned as one of the most romantic and charismatic cities. Located in the city centre, there are many dive centres that offer dive courses for all levels, as well as weekend and day trips to the wrecks and rocky reefs of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Diving in Rome

The dive sites reached from Rome are characterised by intriguing rock formations and deep wrecks, with some that are only in reach of technical divers such as the ‘Nasim Wreck’ which lies just beyond 60 metres. While the vessel was sinking, some of the cars the automobile merchant ship were holding were thrown from the ship and can also be explored 33-60 metres deep. There are biological protection zones close to Rome such as the ‘Banco di Santa Croce’, with sloping walls adorned with gorgonians and sea whips.

Top Wildlife Sightings in Rome

Rome diving features meadows of seagrass and colonies of the endemic red coral that is a rare find in the Mediterranean Sea. Moray eel and conger eel lurk in the cracks and crevasses found within the rock formations while mullet, sea bream and bass patrol the area. On the walls at Circeo, nudibranch add vibrancy to the rock while barracuda circle overhead. The priory of seagrass found in the waters of Circeo holds octopus’ and groupers while lobsters and shrimps shelter within ravines and rocky substrates numerous holes.

The best Months to Dive in Rome

The diving season in Italy runs from April through to October, with the busiest month likely to be August. A minimum water temperature of around 14℃ can be expected in the winter months, from January through to March, while in the summer, from July through to September, temperatures can reach a maximum of 26℃. Yet, if you intend to complete a dive course, the comfort of a heated swimming pool invites you to train at any time.
