Weever

The image shown is a representative illustration and does not depict every individual animal in this category.

Total number of species approx.: 20

Weever fish are small, bottom-dwelling predators found in sandy coastal waters across the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. They are often partially buried in sand, waiting to ambush prey—and can be difficult to spot due to their camouflaged appearance. Divers and snorkelers may encounter weever fish in shallow bays and seagrass edges, especially during warmer months. While generally non-aggressive, they are known for their venomous dorsal spines, which can deliver a painful sting if accidentally stepped on or touched.
