(#3744502) TERU KAZE MARU (★4.3) Teru Kaze Maru was a 35 m-long Japanese submarine hunter and sunk on September, 24th 1944 during a US air raid east of Sangat Island. The bow starts at 4 meters and she continues down on a slant to a maximum depth of 20 meters. Relatively intact, there are a few small holds that you can penetrate. It has a sandy bottom and usually “pool like“ conditions. The maximum depth is six meters and access is with boat. Scubapro, Stephen Frink Twin Rocks, El Nido (★4.4) Twin Rocks is located on the North Side of Miniloc Island, near the famous El Nido Small Lagoon. The dive site slopes from 10 to 21 meters and has a rich sandy bottom. Mares, Janez Kranjc Helicopter Island (★4.4) Divers can explore a wide variety of marine life and coral formations. During the summer, sea grass attracts green sea turtles for feeding, and all seven species of anemone fish found in Bacuit Bay can be spotted here. Scubapro South Miniloc (★4.6) South Miniloc is about 10 minutes by speeedboat from El Nido, 20 minutes by bangka from El Nido. Gentle slope going down to 21 meters but with the best corals at between 14-16 meters. Scubapro Twin Peaks, Coron (★4.2) Amazing underwater world! Clear water and good visibility. Its home to a diverse array of coral, fish, and macro life. Mares North Rock El Nido (★4.3) Discover the wonders of North Rock, a small, secluded rock that can be explored by divers in favorable currents. This renowned dive site boasts a remarkable array of pelagic marine life and breathtaking hard and soft corals. Piotr G. (#3473191) Okikawa Maru (★4.7) One of at least 19 Wartime Standard Merchant Tanker 1TL’s, this wreck was considered one of the most important ships in the Japanese service. During the air raid, its stern sank but the forecastle was still at the surface. It was two weeks later when a follow-up strike was conducted that it finally sank to the bottom. Piotr G. (#3473191) Olympia Maru (★4.5) This ship was a timber hauler that was converted to a a mobile aircraft repair facility and supply depot for the Army. It witnessed and survived the US Navy attacks in Manila Bay and, after which, proceeded to Coron Bay for safety. Unfortunately, the air raid in Coron Bay set the Olympia on fire. Piotr G. (#3473191) Morazan Maru (★4.6) The Morazan was an English passenger cargo vessel that was captured by the Imperial Japanese Navy and used for her war efforts. She sits on her starboard side in 25 meters of seawater. The Morazan’s four cargo holds are empty, but the real treat is the pair of massive boilers in the engine room. Mares AKITSUSHIMA (★4.6) A seaplane tender built by the Japanese that could maintain, repair, and supply huge aircrafts in remote forward bases. This plane was part of the convoy the survived the attack in Manila Bay and then went on to Coron Bay for safety. Piotr G. (#3473191) Lusong Gunboat (★4.4) Lusong Gunboat Shipwreck is one of the twelve World War II Japanese Supply Ships that were hit by an airstrike while anchored in Coron Bay. Mares Paglugaban Island (★4.5) Paglugaban Dive Site in El Nido is located in the Miniloc Area. The highlight of this dive site is the amazing rock formation and boulders with numerous swim-throughs. The site goes down from a shallow corral garden to about 30 meters. Mares, Janez Kranjc Kogyo Maru (★4.5) The Kogyo Maru. The Kogyo Maru (also known locally as the Ekkai Maru) was an Imperial Japanese Navy auxiliary supply ship, attacked by US Task Force 38 on 24 September 1944. She was carrying a load of construction materials for a runway (a bulldozer, cement bags, and mixer are still evident in her hold). Hans E. (#3545391) Alma Jane Wreck (★4.4) A 30m long cargo ship that used to carry goods around the Philippines but, upon retirement, was stripped and scuttled for divers to enjoy as an artificial reef off Puerto Galera in 2003. Its wide beam and deep draft make it ideal for swim throughs. Aqualung Washing Machine (★4.4) A very special site found in Mindoro, this dive spot will surprise you with a number of small interlocking canyons and swim-throughs, along with beautiful coral. Mares Seafan Alley (★4.4) As the name implies, gorgonian fan corals decorate this northernmost area of the atoll. Like most dive sites at Tubbataha, wall drift diving is the name of the game. SSI Service Center Philippines, 6015 Lapu-Lapu City Canyons (★4.3) A favorite dive site that is composed of three canyons running side by side. A must-dive in the area, it is for experienced divers looking for a taste of fast and furious. SSI Service Center Philippines, 6015 Lapu-Lapu City Drop Off (★4.8) Pinnacles reach the surface on the East side of Verde Island and drop away to great depths. A vertical reef with some nice gorgonian fans, sea snakes and frogfish and some large pelagic schools Scubapro, Stephen Frink Sabang Point (★4.4) A beautiful dive site just outside of Sabang. Currents are present depending on the tides. Visibility is always good. You can also see sharks here. Mares, Janez Kranjc Giant Clams/The hill (★4.4) The name speaks for itself. This site is covered in Giant Clams. While there is some coral in the immediate area of the clams, it becomes more sandy bottom as you move away from them. Mares, Janez Kranjc Napoleon Wall (★4.6) At the deeper end of Neptune’s Land, there is a small wall with a depth ranging from 28 to 38 meters that is a popular gathering place for schools of snappers, rainbowrunners, and occasionally, napoleon wrasse. Aqualung Neptunes Land (★4.6) This dive site is a flat plateau connecting Napoleon Wall and the Coral Garden east. As the name indicates, Neptune cups to a considerable size can be found. Also turtles seem to favor this site. Mares Coral Garden East (★4.6) This is an easy but beautiful dive. In a lively garden of mainly hard corals with patches of sand in between, all kinds of marine life can be observed at this beautiful spot. Mares House Reef (★4.4) Depths 2 – 18m. Ideal for beginners, courses or a warm-up dive. No current ever. Still, a wide variety of coral fish can be seen. Nearby ‘Lion fish den’ consists of a group of corals & rocks. Aqualung Corner (★4.5) This dive site on the SW-side of Pandan Island consists of a steep slope with occasional big rocks and canyons that offer shelter to a wide array of reef fishes and attract predators such as mackerels and trevallys. There is a variation of different corals and big sea fans up to 2 meters diameter to be found. Mares, Predrag Vuckovic Coral Garden West (★4.6) Easy but beautiful dive. In a lively garden of mainly hard corals with patches of sand in between all kinds of marine life can be observed at this spot. Aqualung Apo Island - South (Mabuti) (★4.5) Apo Island is located far from the resort and dive centers on Negros island. From there it takes about 4 hours by boat. There is an entrance fee, but it is worth it. Mares Apo Island - Aladin (★4.6) Aladin is a wall dive on the northeast corner of Apo Island, Mindoro Occidental. The dive site is accessible by boat from Pandan Island Resort (www.pandan.com). Mares, Janez Kranjc Manila Channel (★4.3) Similar to the Batangas Channel but with a depth of around 26 meters. Remains of a shipwreck that caught fire and sunk hundreds of years ago can still be seen here. Also an ideal site for night diving Mares, Janez Kranjc Nanshin Maru (★4.3) This wreck is probably an American “Civilian Oil Tanker” most likely sunk by a Typhoon after WWII and was not part of the Japanese Fleet sunk by the American Forces. It sits in an upright position on the sandy bottom at 32m of depth near “Black Island” Scubapro Lighthouse (★4.3) Lighthouse dive site is in line with the lighthouse and the bay headlands. Frequently affected by current hence for advanced divers and higher only. The top of the reef starts at 13m and gently slopes down to a maximum of 45m into the sand. Good visibility on hightide, siltier on an lowtide. Scubapro Apo Island - North (Ego Wall) (★4.7) Located at the northeast corner of Apo Reef, it can be considered as the most impressive dive site in the area. Big and small marine life, everything can be found here. Aqualung Malayan (Wreck) (★4.4) A story goes around that in the 70s ‘Malayan,’ a fishing vessel got the heavy brunt of a strong typhoon & smashed onto the shallow reef top at the southwest side of Tubbatahas’s north atoll. It is now called the Malayan Wreck and has settled on the shallow reef top. Mares Wall Street (★4.4) Further down south along the wall that starts off at Malayan Wreck, ‘Wall Street’ gives credence to its name, a steep wall that plunges deep down 50 – 60 meters & a wonderful colorful coral garden on the reef top at 3 – 5 meters great both for beginning & ending dives. Scubapro, Stephen Frink Amos Rock (★4.5) This site is called Amos Rock due to a distinct rock formation on the reef top at 5 meters where schooling midnight snapper converge. Amos Rock is an alternate dive spot when Amihan winds are blowing at full force, forbidding access to eastern dive spots. Mares, Janez Kranjc Delsan Wreck (★4.5) Delsan is considered a top 50 dive destination on the planet. The reef top starts at 5 meters and gently slopes toward the edges of a wall to 23 meters where a crevasse plunging to 40 meters becomes a refuge from the raging current. Mares Ko-Ok (★4.4) An underrated dive site where tiger shark encounters have been recorded. Undulating sun rays filtering through the asymmetrical arrangement on the steep wall where the reef top starts at 3 meters plunging to incongruent depths lend beauty to Ko-Ok a kin to an abstract Picasso piece of art. Aqualung Black Rock (★4.6) One of the few known reef manta cleaning stations in Southeast Asia where cleaner wrasse serve to remove dead skin off the mantas’ body. This site is called Black Rock because of a rock at 8 meters where one of the buoys are set up. Scubapro, Stephen Frink Triggerfish City (★4.7) The reef top starts at 5 meters going west inwards where red tooth triggerfish converge, hence the name. Though titan triggerfish are also around to pick up a fight with the unsuspecting diver during nesting season. Mares, Predrag Vuckovic Staghorn Point (★4.7) Starting at 7 meters, undulating fields of staghorn coral extending to about 500 meters creep to the edges of a wall that plunges deep at Tubbataha. Virginia Scuba, 20109 Manassas West Escarceo (★4.5) This beautiful site is covered in brightly colored coral and is full of life. Weather and time of year can change this dive from a drift dive to a slow paced tour. Expect tons of fish and sea critters on this dive.
