A flooded shale mine in the Sauerland offers the possibility to dive in an open area or, with the right training, to dive deep into the old mine.

We find old rails, trolleys and many forgotten tools in the old corridors. Tools and one or two surprises were left behind when the mine was closed down.

With the enactment of the new public use regulation in May 2004, the leisure use of the Binsfeld Lakes was newly regulated. This particularly concerned divers with technical equipment. The Hitdorfer See is a former dredging lake just under 10 hectares in size; 473 meters long and 273 meters wide. The maximum depth is 18m. Due to gently sloping banks, the lake is suitable for beginners to dive. There are two training platforms at 5m and 9m depth.

The Haselbacher See is a flooded former open cast lignite mine. It is located at the state border of Saxony / Thuringia and is used differently. On Saxonian territory, the water sovereignty lies with the DAV - Saxony as tenant. The Thuringian part is used for water sports and tourism.

The Widdauen Lakes were created from a former gravel pit. Diving depths of up to 27 meters can be reached. The entire site offers a good infrastructure with toilets, barbecue areas, spacious shelters and a good supply of parking spaces.

The Prellesee former granite quarry is also called Kesselbruch. The water depth is 46.5m with 1.8 hectares surface area. Visibility is usually 6 - 12m. Access is regulated by the allocation of keys. Registration and sign-out is usually done via the dive center Steina.
