For those preferring shorter trips, the local islands near Ao Nang offer fantastic macro diving just minutes from the mainland. With warm waters averaging 27°C–30°C/80°F–86°F, Krabi is a year-round diving paradise, though the best conditions are from November to April when the seas are at their calmest.

This is one our favourite dive sites since it has the widest range of wildlife. The reef gently slopes down from the island apart from the wall at the south west which drops 22-26 meters.

Viking Cave (★4.6)

Viking Cave has a striking bay and a beautiful cave above the water, but the real deal is underwater a few hundred meters to the north of Viking Cave. A few years ago, the Phuket Marine Conservation department put down a beautiful artificial reef to re-establish marine life after the tsunami.

Koh Haa Yai #5 (Cathedral) (★4.6)

Koh Haa Yai is the largest of this group of islands. Often mistakenly called Koh Haa Five, many divers love to visit the three large caverns on the south west of Koh Haa Yai. Two of the caverns are inter-connecting via a large round swim-through and the largest is often referred to as The Cathedral.

Koh Bida Nai (★4.4)

One of many dive sites at Phi Phi islands. Small rocky island south from Phi Phi Lee. Diving depht starts at 5 meters and goes to 30 meters plus. This site lies just to the north of Koh Bida Nok and is made of limestone cliffs hosting a large array of marine life.

Shark Point (Hin Bida) (★4.5)

Shark Point is one the most famous and popular diving sites of Koh Phi Phi. It is maybe the best place to spot many Leopard Sharks resting and sleeping. The site consists of a large rock going down to 22 meters deep on a sandy bottom where the Sharks usually stay. Don’t worry, this kind of Shark is totally harmles

RTN Kled Gaeow (Wreck) (★4.5)

Decommissioned in 2014, the ship was donated and purposely sunk via controlled explosion to create a new dive site on 19 March 2014. The 47 metre long wreck sits almost upright (20 degree list) facing north to south (bow-stern), some 800-1000m to the east of Piley Bay (Ko Phi Phi Ley).

Maya Corner, Maya Bay (★4.5)

Found on the west side of Koh Phi Phi Lei is the beautiful Maya Bay, made famous for being the location of the movie ‘The Beach.’ The dive site of Maya Corner starts just inside the bay’s northern entrance, and follows the coastline north. It is a steep shelved reef, with occasional sections of walls.

Pura Vida Phi Phi, 81000 Krabi

Garang Heang/Hin Klai (★4.7)

This side is a submerged Pinnacle covered in coral, not as frequented as other dive sites in the region as it is not a suitable site for beginners or students.

Mushroom Rock is the first dive site after the northern tip of Phi Phi Ley, on the west side of the island. A site formed of large pinnacles reaching the surface including the one shaped like a mushroom.

Hin Ngam is located at the south west part of Koh Rok Noi and is a rocky dive site with an abundance of hard and soft corals. This is a great area for macro life such as shrimp and nudibranchs, and for larger species of sea cucumber, angelfish, surgeonfish, moray eels and turtles.

Recently seen around Koh Haa Neung are zebra sharks, black trip reef sharks, several different whale sharks, devil (mobular) rays, nurse shark, eagle ray, guitarfish and many other larger species, making the group of 6 islands at Koh Haa one of the top dive and snorkel locations in Thailand.

On the West side of Phi Phi Leh , north of Maya Bay, there is the bay of Malong, a frequented dive site between December and May, only dived occasionally during the Monsoon season.

Situated on the east side of Phi Phi Ley, Palong Bay is the next bay north of the famous Maya Bay, made famous by the movie “The Beach.” This dive is s relatively simple one and is rarely affected by currents. The dive heads south from Palong Bay towards Maya Bay.

The best Months to dive in Krabi

Krabi offers year-round diving opportunities with water temperatures typically ranging from 27°C–30°C/81°F–86°F. During the dry season, which spans from November to April, conditions are most favorable with calm seas and excellent visibility, often reaching up to 25 meters/82 feet. This period is ideal for divers seeking clear waters and vibrant marine life.

From May to October, Krabi experiences the monsoon season, bringing stronger winds and currents, which can reduce visibility to around 10 meters/33 feet. While diving is still possible, it is less predictable, and some sites may be more challenging due to rougher seas. Divers should stay informed on weather conditions to plan their trips effectively and ensure safety.
