Sea Slugs are sometimes called the butterflies of the sea, but they’re more than just a pretty face! Not only are they adorned in a bewitching spectrum of colours, they’re also excellent indicators of how our environment is changing.
VNPA run a quarterly Sea Slug Census, and Aquaholics always participates and submits data to their iNaturalist database. This is the perfect dive for the conservation-minded underwater photographer.
Collecting photos of sea slugs present at different times during the year helps us to monitor these species and track any changes. Each of your observations increases knowledge on these short-lived and unusual molluscs. The images you collect will help us unravel the mysteries of these critters and detect changes in sea slug populations.
We will be going to Blairgowrie Marina, as finding Nudibranchs and other Sea Slugs there is always enjoyable. Aquatic Adventures, who will be providing dive safety support for the activity, have also offered to run a Nudibranch Ecology course alongside the dive for those who are interested - contact them directly for more information.
