The forkbeard (Phycis phycis) is a deep-reef fish found in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, known for its elongated body, forked tail, and chin barbels. It typically stays near the seafloor, hiding in crevices or under ledges by day. More often seen during night dives or at depth, forkbeards emerge after dark to forage for small fish and invertebrates.
